Director of ChinaSF (full time)

This San Francisco based position is an opportunity for a highly motivated individual who possesses a passion for international development to join a high-profile economic development organization. GlobalSF in partnership with the Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD) is seeking an experienced business development professional to develop and manage a business attraction and retention effort for San Francisco focusing on companies in and from China, including Hong Kong and Macau.


  • Develop and execute a marketing strategy focused on attracting Chinese companies to San Francsico

  • Attract and recruit Chinese businesses to San Francisco and develop and track qualified leads

  • Assist Chinese companies in navigating the various regulations and requirements necessary to establish a business in San Francisco

  • Provide assistance and introductions to San Francisco-based firms seeking business opportunities in China, Hong Kong or Macau

  • Manage relationships with partner organizations; government and private sector entities in San Francisco; and State and Federal governments in the U.S. and China, including Hong Kong and Macau

  • Develop and deliver sector-focused San Francisco sales presentations

  • Develop and implement fundraising program to grow initiative

  • Manage reporting requirements

  • Re-establish offices and manage staff in China offices Beijing/Shanghai/Shenzhen

  • Manage, mentor and coach all direct reports to meet goals of initiative

Requirements and Experience:

Candidate should have significant experience managing and implementing an economic development job growth program; excellent written verbal and written communication and presentation skills; and previous experience working in China combined with the following requirements:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a business development position combining international experience

  • Must be bilingually fluent in written and spoken English and Mandarin, trilingual Cantonese a plus

  • Proven experience as a client relationship manager

  • Minimum Bachelor’s college degree

  • iOS and social media skills

  • Well organized, self-started, able to work independently

  • Business plan development, including program development and fundraising strategy

  • Prior live/work in China, Hong Kong or Macau a plus

Program Associate (volunteer)

Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Conduct extensive market and company research;

  • Assist ChinaSF HQ office with administrative tasks, including finance and accounting, database management, schedule management;

  • Assist in the coordination to host Chinese business/government delegations visiting San Francisco City Hall, local companies, and ChinaSF;

  • Assist with events (e.g. industry events, China-US business events, conferences, etc.);

  • Attend client development meetings, take notes and follow up as appropriate;

  • Assist with translation from English to Chinese and/or Chinese to English;

  • Assist with other necessary tasks as appropriate.


  • Strong Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint);

  • Strong research skills;

  • Ability to use online databases and marketing software;

  • Strong interest in Asia-US economic, trade, and business relations;

  • English and Mandarin Chinese language skills preferred;

  • Ability to work independently and efficiently.

Media and Marketing Associate (volunteer)

Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Create, design and revise logos, flyers, one pagers, letters, graphics, and other marketing related materials;

  • Create and edit presentation via PowerPoint;

  • Update website and social media channels, including WeChat, Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn;

  • Send out updates and events via email blasts;

  • Collect and analyze data on social media engagement;

  • Work with staff to host events and delegations;

  • Assist with other tasks as appropriate.


  • Familiarity with various social media platforms;

  • Familiarity with website maintenance and email marketing software;

  • Digital art experience a plus;

  • Interest in China-US economic, trade, and business relations a plus;

  • English and Mandarin Chinese language skills preferred;

  • Ability to work independently and efficiently.
